What Is Psychiatric Medication Management?
Medication management is ongoing care from a prescriber who evaluates your symptoms, prescribes psychiatric medication when it is appropriate, and then adjusts dose, timing and combinations until the medication is doing its job with the fewest side effects. It covers antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication, mood stabilizers, ADHD medication, sleep aids and antipsychotics, as well as tapering off a medication safely.
At Archway it is delivered by psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs), who are licensed to diagnose and prescribe in Kansas. Anaya Kole is dual-certified in psychiatric and family practice with nearly a decade across acute, outpatient and specialty settings; Rachel Stauffer brings nearly ten years of nursing including extensive inpatient psychiatry. Many of our patients also see one of our therapists, and because everyone is in the same practice, your prescriber can read your therapist’s notes with your consent.
What to Expect at Your Medication Management Appointment
Initial psychiatric evaluation. This is the longest visit. Your provider reviews your symptoms and how long you have had them, your medical history, past medications and what happened on each, family history, sleep, substance use and current stressors. You leave with a working diagnosis and a plan, which may or may not include medication.
Follow-up visits. These are shorter. Early on, follow-ups are usually every two to four weeks so your provider can see how you respond and manage side effects. Once you are stable, visits stretch to every one to three months. Refills are sent to your pharmacy between visits as long as you keep your scheduled appointments.
Labs and coordination. Some medications need baseline or periodic bloodwork, which we order and review. We also coordinate with your primary care provider and, if needed, refer for Spravato when depression has not responded to standard antidepressants. Who Benefits From Medication Management?
We see adults and adolescents in Olathe and across Johnson County for:
- Depression, including treatment-resistant depression
- Anxiety, panic attacks and social anxiety
- ADHD in teens and adults
- Bipolar disorder and mood instability
- PTSD and trauma-related symptoms
- OCD, insomnia and postpartum mood changes
Medication management is also the right place to start if you are already on a psychiatric medication from your primary care doctor that is not working well, if you want a second opinion on your diagnosis, or if you would like to taper off a medication safely.
Outcomes of Effective Medication Management
The goal is not just a prescription but the right prescription. Research on combined care consistently shows that medication plus psychotherapy outperforms either one alone for depression and anxiety, which is why Archway was built as a single practice offering both. Patients typically report steadier mood, better sleep and concentration, and fewer side effects once the dose is dialed in, and they are far less likely to stop a medication abruptly because someone is checking in every few weeks.
Your provider tracks your symptoms visit to visit so you can see progress over time, not just how you feel on a given day.

Cost of Medication Management
in Olathe, KS
Psychiatric medication management at Archway is billed to insurance like a specialist office visit. We are in network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Ambetter, Kansas Medicaid and Medicare, depending on the provider you see, and we accept HSA and FSA cards, card and check. Your cost is your plan’s specialist co-pay or, if you have not met your deductible, the contracted rate for the visit.
If you are paying out of pocket, self-pay rates differ for an initial evaluation versus a follow-up, so call or text (913) 494-8550 for a quote before you book. Our payment and insurance page explains out-of-network benefits and superbills.

Medication Management FAQs
Do I need a referral to see a psychiatric provider at Archway?
No. You can book an initial psychiatric evaluation directly by calling or texting (913) 494-8550 or using the Book A Session button. Some insurance plans require a referral for specialist visits, so check your plan if you are unsure.
How often are medication management appointments?
After the initial evaluation, follow-ups are usually every two to four weeks while a medication is being started or adjusted, then every one to three months once you are stable.
Can I do medication management by telehealth?
Yes. Archway offers secure video visits for patients anywhere in Kansas. Some controlled medications may require an in-person visit under state and federal rules; your provider will tell you if that applies.
Do I have to be in therapy to get medication at Archway?
No, though we encourage it because research shows medication plus therapy works better than either alone. Many patients see one of our therapists and a prescriber in the same practice.
What if my current antidepressant is not working?
Bring the name, dose and how long you took it to your evaluation. Your provider may adjust the dose, switch medications, add a second medication, or discuss Spravato if two or more antidepressants have not helped.
