Dissociative disorders involve a disconnection or lack of continuity between thoughts, memories, surroundings, identity, and emotions. People may feel detached from themselves or the world around them. These conditions often develop as a way to cope with overwhelming stress or trauma.
Dissociative disorders often stem from overwhelming or long-term trauma, particularly during childhood. Experiences such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, the sudden loss of a loved one, or exposure to repeated distressing events can lead the brain to disconnect as a survival mechanism. In some cases, the mind creates separation between thoughts, memories, and identity to cope with pain that feels too intense to process. Without proper support or intervention, these protective patterns can persist and evolve into a dissociative disorder.
