Mood disorders are mental health conditions that affect a person’s emotional state and overall mood. These disorders go beyond occasional sadness or moodiness—they involve ongoing or extreme emotional patterns that interfere with work, relationships, and daily activities. Common types include depression, bipolar disorder, and cyclothymia.
Mood disorders are typically caused by a mix of genetic, biological, psychological, and environmental factors. A family history of mental health conditions can increase risk, as can imbalances in brain chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine. Life events—like trauma, chronic stress, or loss—can also trigger or worsen symptoms. Sometimes, medical conditions or substance use may contribute to the development of mood disorders. It’s often a combination of these factors that influences a person’s emotional regulation over time.
